A series of eye-catching educational resources explaining the role of Local Government
Mount Alexander Shire councillor Max Lesser has launched a series of colourful and eye-catching educational resources that will be used to help explain the role of local government to children.
The ‘Councillor PEG Project’ resources - which include a card game, mazes, colouring activities and more - have been developed by Cr Lesser as part of the charity The Goldenhope Foundation.
“I saw a need to introduce local government in a way that makes it interesting,”Cr Lesser said.
“The games and activities help young people to understand what rates go towards and what local government does,” he said.
The Councillor PEG Project stands for People, Education, Government and the resources use mathematical and geometrical designs that were developed by students from the region.
“I’ve had feedback from students and adults who told me that they had no idea about the services provided by local government, until they worked through the activities,” Cr Lesser said.
“I look forward to seeing the resources used in the classroom,” he said.
Cr Lesser has worked with the state peak body for local government - the Municipal Association of Victoria - to refine the messages and information.
The launch was attended by community members, along with representatives from Mount Alexander Shire Council, City of Greater Bendigo, Castlemaine Historic Society Inc and Chewton Phoenix and Harcourt CWA.
It was fitting that Saturday’s launch was held at the Business, Bunfights and Brawls exhibition at the Castlemaine Historical Society headquarters at the Old Courthouse in Goldsmith Crescent.
The exhibition is part of the National Trust Australian Heritage Festival and highlights the colourful history of the establishment of local government in the Mount Alexander area ..........
